Thumper: Pocket Edition
Rythm Violence
Version: 1.05

Waldo's Rating 8.3/10

8.3out of 10

Thumper is a psychedelic adventure that challenges your reflexes. This game is like an interactive version of that movie Enter The Void. Describing the objective of this game is difficult because it feels like an endless adventure and each task you complete transitions so smoothly into the next. You appear to be some sort of metal beetle racing down a slide in a trippy world full of color and your tasks involve shooting back light beams at creatures composed of just moving shapes as well as avoid obstacles and trying desperately to remain on course. The sound in this game make this game something that deserves a gold medal because it not only fits the game perfectly but it's on its own level of entertainment. Overall I really enjoyed this game.

Rating Breakdown

This game was given a score of 8.3/10 which is good. Anything above a 5.0 is considered a great game. Below is a breakdown of the elements that were factored into the rating for this game. Even though Waldo's reviews are based on personal opinion, each game's rating follows a strict confidential rubric system for fairness.

User Interface Design (UI)
There's a lot of motion and it introduces the game but I feel like the menu and icons are a little weak. For a game with strong visuals, the UI seems like a lazy after thought.
User Experience Design (UX)
Clear navigation. Clean layout. My only problem with the UX is the help screen takes you to a webpage outside of the app. Seems silly to have to leave the app for documentation about the app.
Game Design
Game design is incredibly fluid. Movement is smooth and colorful. Sequences and background animations are just flawless. Levels are setup perfectly to allow for you to see what's coming next.
Learning Curve
The controls were a little difficult to understand at first. Being a cross platform game, I understand the challenge they may have had, but I think the designers could have thought more about how to explain basic game play in the beginning.
Difficulty Progression
The difficulty progression isn't as smooth as it could be. It gets really hard, really fast.
Playtime Longevity
I would play this game for about a week, nothing more.
Sound Design
Absolutely flawless. Entertainment on its own level.
It gets a little frustrating pretty early on. I wish the game gave a little more build up to the challenge.
Concept Originality
One of the most original games I've played in a long time. 10/10
Post Production
Better than usual trailer, description and screenshots.
