Prepare for the Storm

Checking in on mental health during Hurricane Dorian

September 2, 2019

I want everyone to check in on themselves today.

Are you safe?

Today, I prepare for a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian as it slowly approaches my city as a Category 5 Hurricane. For me, today, my safety is physical. But for you, it might be mental.

Why is it that we need to wait for something catastrophic to happen to check in on ourselves? A storm approaches and the whole town rushes to the store to deplete the shelves of water and bread and fuel. It creates a panic as these stores start to run out of supplies.

But why weren't we prepared for this? We live in a tropical area, during a season where Hurricanes frequent.

A couple of years ago I was so unhealthy that when something horrible happened I wasn't ready for the "storm". Imagine going through a Category 5 Hurricane in your mind without any shutters or concrete walls. Without any supplies. I was ready to die.

Unlike today there were no warnings.

No elected officials to give me guidance.

That's why it's important to do routine check-ins. Make sure you have what you need. Keep up with the upkeep. Check-in with yourself regularly.

Had I been prepared the damages would've been minimal.

So whether you're on the east coast waiting for Dorian or you're skating by in life, make sure you have what you need. Make sure you're doing what needs to be done.

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but a few minutes of meditation each day or keeping a journal combined with exercising regularly does amazing things for your mind.

A healthy mind can conquer any storm.

Stay safe my friends.
